German Success Inspires Swiss For UERO 2008
By euro2008
Swiss politician Benedikt Weibel is looking to emulate the
success of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in neighbouring Germany
as preparations for UEFA EURO 2008™ continue apace.
'Perfect tournament'
The former head of Swiss national railways, Weibel was
appointed as the federal parliament's delegate for the EURO
at the beginning of January and has spent much of the
interim analysing the success of last summer's World Cup,
which he believes provides an excellent framework. "That was
a perfect tournament and should serve as a benchmark for us
all," he said, in his first public appearance since taking
the post. "The benefits far outweighed the costs and the
country's image got a gigantic boost from the tournament.
There's no reason why we can't do just as well."
'Important players'
Weibel was at a media conference in Berne with Samuel
Schmid, head of Switzerland's department for defence and
sport, as well as the country's UEFA EURO 2008™ tournament
director Christian Mutschler, with the main message to
emerge being that everything is running on time. The Swiss
FA is currently working on its hosting concept, and Schmid
is keen for "the general public to be important players".
Germany, he said, has raised the bar considerably in terms
of staging a big event and the decisive factor for the
success of UEFA EURO 2008™ will depend on large scale
support.
Security
Security measures are another thing the Swiss are keen to
emphasise. "We know we aren't just a bunch of choir boys
here in Switzerland," said Schmid. "Our reputation as a
nation with a high standard of security is on the line." To
this aim, moves are afoot to launch fan projects and
information campaigns after new federal laws came in at the
start of the year allowing police to operate stadium bans
and travel bans. "England has shown us how you can clamp
down on trouble in the stadiums," Schmidt concluded.
